Sam Haskins is a risk and compliance expert in the Financial Services practice in London. Sam helps clients navigate complex regulatory compliance and risk issues and supports financial institutions, regulators and enforcement agencies across the full spectrum of financial regulation.
Sam has extensive experience working in change and risk leadership roles, with large business and risk transformation programmes, with regulators, and within commercial, investment and retail banks. This includes the development of risk policies and standards, as well as the standardisation, centralisation and automation of risk management systems and controls.
Sam has held leadership roles in risk advisory practices for major consulting firms. He has led multiple risk management assignments spanning conduct risk, financial crime compliance, operational risk, regulatory change and skilled person reviews, for both global and mid-tier financial services institutions in the UK, the Nordics and the Balkans. Sam has worked with banks to improve their governance and risk management arrangements against regulatory expectations, developing practical and innovative solutions. He has also worked with chief risk officers to transform risk functions to respond to non-financial risk types, making use of new technologies. Sam was also seconded to a central bank to lead their internal risk function, managing risk and reporting to the board of directors.
Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Sam led the regulatory affairs function at a mid-tier bank, covering the spectrum of the regulatory lifecycle. This included leading regulatory engagement with domestic regulators, horizon-scanning for international and domestic reform, liaising with regulators, government and industry bodies on proposed reforms and acting as an adviser to the CEO and executive team on regulatory matters. Sam managed the bank’s response to liquidity stress events, major compliance breaches and investigations, together with the bank’s response to regulatory changes, including anti-money laundering (“AML”), Brexit, the Capital Requirements Regulation (“CRR”), Consumer Duty, the revised Payment Services Directive (“PSD2”), the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (“SM&CR”) and others.
