Beji Varghese

Beji Varghese is a Senior Managing Director in the Financial Services practice based in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is an accomplished project leader and a problem-solver with more than 30 years of experience addressing complex financial services risk management, compliance and technology-related issues.

Mr. Varghese is an experienced mortgage banker. He has worked as the COO of a de-novo mortgage company and as a consultant to the top twenty mortgage servicers and originators in the country. He has also served as an independent consultant reviewing compliance with mortgage origination and servicing-related matters for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (“CFPB”).

Mr. Varghese has a strong technology background and has designed and implemented large data warehouses to support profitability reporting. He has also led multiple technology tool selection projects for large financial institutions, helping banking clients develop detailed business requirements and technical specifications and conduct end-user testing for large custom system implementations. Additionally, he is a testifying expert and has worked closely with law firms, regulators, boards of directors, C-suite executives and outside counsel.

Mr. Varghese has supported the top 50 consumer finance companies with compliance reviews and monthly second-line defense compliance testing. Throughout his career, he has played a crucial role in automating compliance testing based on available client data, focusing this effort on state and federal servicing compliance testing.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Varghese was a partner at Guidehouse, where he worked with consumer finance companies focused on regulatory risk management and compliance. In this role, he was responsible for developing, maintaining and growing the consumer finance offshore managed services team. Before Guidehouse, Mr. Varghese served as the COO of a full-service specialty mortgage company responsible for mortgage operations, technology and offshore managed services. Prior to this role, Mr. Varghese was a senior manager at PwC in their consumer finance practice.

Relevant Experience:

• Assisted a multinational bank with Federal Credit Reporting Act (“FCRA”) remediation involving one million tradelines; the work included identifying issues, developing computer programs to create historical tradelines based on servicing data and furnishing to the Credit Reporting Agencies (“CRA”)
• Worked with multiple financial institutions to identify and remediate compliance issues with their bankruptcy process and reporting
• Retained by counsel representing a large student loan servicer as a FCRA expert witness
• Supported multiple nonbank firms by reviewing the reasonableness of pricing offered by affiliates; provided a final report shared with various regulators
• Supported several mortgage companies, banks and financial institutions with compliance reviews and assisted with the required remediation if issues were identified
• Oversaw the development of business requirements and technical specifications for a mortgage servicing system; performed user acceptance testing
• Managed an Independent Foreclosure Review (“IFR”) for a large mortgage servicer
• Oversaw the design, development and implementation of a profitability data warehouse for top mortgage servicers
• Managed a frequency marketing data warehouse for a global hospitality company
