About Nick
Nick Fernandez is a Managing Director in the Construction, Projects & Assets practice with more than 12 years of experience in the engineering, procurement and construction (“EPC”) industry, specializing in heavy civil infrastructure, mining, industrial and energy projects in the United States and Latin America. He is the global lead for the Portfolio, Program and Project Management Office (“3PMO”) service, focused on enhancing capital project delivery and process improvement around project controls and finance.
Mr. Fernandez offers professional services in a variety of areas, including project management, asset valuation, M&A, interim management and portfolio and risk management. He specializes in scheduling, estimating, governance, contract and reporting management and cost and construction oversight.
With a focus on major construction and infrastructure projects in the oil and gas, renewables and heavy civil industries in the United States and Latin America, Mr. Fernandez excels in project planning, procurement, operations, maintenance, budgeting and financial management. Additionally, he has experience in interim management roles aimed at optimizing and planning operations and governance to benefit project development and delivery. Notably, he has advised the Department of Energy (“DOE”) on significant renewable and refinery projects in North America and actively oversees the capital project portfolio for one of the largest U.S. refineries.
Prior to FTI Consulting, Mr. Fernandez worked at the largest EPC construction company in Mexico. During his tenure, he led the Latin America project finance segment, where he was involved in various M&A projects and advised on financial and operational improvements.
Mr. Fernandez holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico and an M.B.A. from the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he received the Beta Gamma Sigma recognition. Mr. Fernandez is a member of the Adam Smith Society and a co-founder of the University of Colorado branch.
Relevant Experience:
- Project managed and oversaw 60 subcontractors and workstreams of a $320 million greenfield industrial manufacturing facility during EPC; reduced subcontractor delays through critical path optimization exercises
- Served as the senior technical advisor for the DOE Loan Programs Office for distressed projects; managed technical enhancement initiatives focused on maximizing asset life and increasing performance yields
- Optimized the refinement of procurement strategies and long-range maintenance planning and identified high-value optimization investment capital expenditure (“CAPEX”) projects to help increase performance output for two of the largest concentrated solar power plants in the United States
- Led the enhanced project delivery process focused on identifying gaps and deficiencies; designed a recommendation roadmap; executed initiatives around cost, schedule, contracting, procurement and process and procedure improvements around a more than $200 million capital project portfolio for one of the largest refineries in North America
- Acted as the financial restructuring coordinator on the owner side during the largest financial restructuring of a publicly traded company in the Mexican Stock Exchange (“BMV”); implemented optimization tactics, cost-reduction procedures and valuation models to effectively stabilize and renegotiate the company’s $1.2 billion debt in 12 weeks
