Mark A. Van Ert

Mark Van Ert has over 25 years of executive leadership experience with major healthcare organizations and has led initiatives for clients including Medicare Advantage and commercial/ACA payers, health systems and provider groups including specialty providers, health services companies and investors.

Mr. Van Ert's expertise is focused on health plan operations, including leading HCC coding reviews in support of RADV audits, due diligence, or as a component of larger compliance or performance improvement initiatives; Evaluating and strengthening the effectiveness of Managed Care operations and compliance programs, including Risk Adjustment and Quality; and developing analytics and management dashboards to enable decision-making related to operational improvements, strategy-setting, and dispute resolution.

Prior to joining FTI Consulting, Mr. Van Ert was an executive at Optum, a division of UnitedHealth Group where he held several leadership positions in Quality and Risk Adjustment Operations and was responsible for approximately $40 billion in Medicare Advantage and ACA submissions to CMS and HHS. He created processes and systems to perform self-directed and government-mandated audits (e.g. RADV) to ensure accuracy of submissions and corresponding payments, implemented Process and Control framework to ensure accuracy and completeness of all work, and he was responsible for analyzing, remediating, and quantifying impacts of changes to data submissions. He also led teams of analysts and data scientists responsible for helping numerous payers and provider groups maximize the effectiveness of their quality and risk adjustment programs.

Previous to working with Optum, Mr. Van Ert’s experience includes performance improvement initiatives at multiple organizations, including corporate capital restructuring, balance sheet rationalization, and operational re-engineering to improve organizational profitability and stability. In addition, Mr. Van Ert has experience as a divisional CFO of Fortune 200 companies, he has experience leading strategy, finance and operational teams and has led investor and media relations for publicly traded corporations.

Mr. Van Ert holds his B.S. in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics and his M.B.A. from the University of Minnesota.
