About Stéphane
Stéphane Woerther has more than 20 years of experience advising governments and private players on the structuring and financing of energy projects, as well as on climate finance-related issues. Stéphane leads the Energy Project & Climate Finance practice in Paris.
With a career spanning over two decades, Stéphane stands as a distinguished advisor in the realms of energy project and climate finance. His deep expertise has guided governments, financial institutions and corporations through the complexities of structuring and financing diverse energy projects, from liquefied natural gas (“LNG”) to off-grid renewables, as well as navigating the intricacies of climate finance.
In recent years, Stéphane has been at the forefront of pioneering initiatives, such as leading the auctioning of green mini-grid projects across Africa or crafting innovative carbon credit funds, marking significant strides towards sustainable energy solutions. As the founder and managing partner of Philae Advisory from 2015 to 2023, Stéphane spearheaded the firm's strategic direction, expanding its influence and team. Under his leadership, Philae Advisory became an expert advisory firm in the energy and climate sector, particularly across the African continent.
Prior to his tenure at Philae Advisory, Stéphane served as the head of project and structured finance in a Swiss-based Asset Manager where, he orchestrated the structuring of a USD1.1 billion African infrastructure fund and a USD250 million African mining fund. Before, Stéphane worked as a director in the sovereign advisory group at LAZARD, where he led advisory mandates in infrastructure, mining and energy sectors. His tenure at LAZARD was marked by his involvement in high-profile projects such as the EDF EN’s solar photovoltaic (“PV”) portfolio and the financing of the PNG’s state equity in the PNG LNG project, among others.
Stéphane's early career saw him working at the French Export Credit Agency, Coface, as a senior project finance manager, and at ENGIE as a consulting engineer, laying the groundwork for his expertise in energy economics and finance. His journey began at NASA in 2001 as a research engineer, where he embarked on his professional path with a focus on innovative solutions.
